Bia Mara: fish and chips restaurant in Antwerp

A great addition to Antwerp's restaurant scene: Bia Mara. Last month I was invited to the opening and had a most delicious fish and chips experience! From hungry locals to selfie taking tourists, they are all finding their way to this restaurant in the city centre. 


The owners, two men from Dublin, Barry Wallace and Simon Whiteside had already opened a fish and chips restaurant in Brussels and London and have now brought their success formula with seasonal and sustainable fish to the centre of Antwerp. With a view of the city hall tower and original floor tiles and bar, this place oozes charm. You can't be more central than this and tucking into your fish supper while looking at the beautifully lit historic buildings has something magical to it.


It sounds like there is only one dish on the menu but at Bia Mara they surprise you with with different exotic influences like lime and lemongrass tempura and Ethiopian panko. It is not the fish and chips that you know. There is a nice selection of different fish and different recipes, like tempura and panko, two Japanse cooking techniques, that the chef likes and I like too! The Irish touch is present in the black fish, it's the epic Irish Guinness in the batter! Even the mushy peas on the side have little twist: they are extra flavoured with mint. 
They recently added fish tacos to their menu and those got the thumbs up from me.

I will have to warn you though, it is going to be difficult to choose from the menu, it's all equally yummie!
